By Jennie Lummis and Martha Gregory
Day 1 of Elite/Select Challenge
First game in beautiful Ohio against Pop! Warming up from our travels, we traded points throughout the game. Some highlights included: kcole's deep looks and the smooth movement of our offense. Katie made strides towards the season long goal of bankrupting B Lo with a layout D and then a score, earning herself a dollar. Don't spend it all in one place, Katie. As cap closed in, Lexi caught a score to tie at 9s. Our defense ran down and got a turn in the short field; Jennie picked up and found Alli in the end zone. 10-9 BENT.
Second game against Capitals! The Canadians put the first point on the board but we quickly answered. We traded points and breaks until half, when the Caps broke to make 5-7. Despite some strong D points, we were unable to convert and the Capitals took the game 6-10.
Third game: BENT vs Encore. Both teams score their first offensive points, BENT runs down and gets the D. Jennie to Martha for the score #buddyconnection. Later, Pepe opens up the field with a boss hammer and the offense slices and dices the zone D. Martha gets a sick hand block that gains yards, BKap to Stazi for the break. On offense, Sophie catches a bobbled disc for the score #itsnotovertilithitstheground. After Aki makes a dirty grab and hits Anne for the goal (11-5), Aideen finds Rebecca for the game. 12-5 BENT.
Game four against Tabby Rosa. We trade points for a while, Sophie skying everyone to take us to 3s. Then we break twice, once to an upline Randall, once "after Anne does a bunch of Anne stuff." If you're wondering what that might entail, keep wondering. We like to keep our secret weapons secret. 5-3. We take half, but Tabby Rosa comes back swinging. Katie gets a hand block on the goal line and Anna puts it to Beks to bring us to 8-6. We keep pushing through and break again as soft cap goes on, Tiff to Alli to make it 11-8, game to 13. Tabby Rosa doesn't take it lying down, but after a few points BENT comes out on offense and Judy puts it deep to Katie for the win #somuchheightsolittletime. 13-10 BENT.
Inspiration strikes and we invent a new cheer. P-O-R-K PORK PORK PORK.
End of Day 1.
DAY 2 of Elite/Select Challenge
We come out swinging against Pittsburgh Hot Metal and make some serious dents right off the bat. The ground is muddy and the grass from our cleats could have probably helped re-sod your front yard but we call that perfect layout conditions. It was pouring rain for a bit there too. The intensity level was high and BENT showed some grit as we out cheered and then began out scoring our esteemed opponents. After breaking to take the lead 4-3 we score 4 in a row to take half, 7-3. We concede only 3 more while scoring the rest ourselves to win the game 12-6. Offense looks tight tight tight and D is doing work. Somewhere in there Martha holsters what would have been an absurdly egregious spike, Kcole commends her on said holster #crisisaverted.
6th game of the tournament finds us matched up in the semi-finals against Molly Brown. We start the game feeling pumped and ready for battle... but then we get spanked. Hard. A decisive 13-2 loss has us wondering who the heck forgot the wheaties at breakfast because apparently no one had had any. Either that or the entire team forgot to take their pre-game dump. The jury is still out but what we can rule on is that we came out flat. However, we were reminded afterwards that we win as a team and lose as a team and each moment together, each success and each failure, pushes us forward to the next. Only we can decide where to go from here. Only WE can prevent forest fires.
Still a little rocked from our loss to MB, we are a bit wobbly as we start our game for third against our now epic rival, Iris. We score first but can't keep a lead for very long. We trade a few points early on before Iris pulls away. After our Zone D generates a short turn, Bkap hits Jennie for a dope layout score, then Michelle hits Alli streaking deep and we bring it to 5-9. Iris drops the pull (Lexi thinks she made them drop it with her mind bullets) and we quickly capitalize; Cara tosses casually to Aideen in the endzone which brings the score to 6-9. We trade again but then Michelle puts it to Lexi to make it 7-11. We are slowly closing the gap! Stazi gets some dope tight dope bookends; a great D and then scores to make it 9-11. Cap goes on but Alli cleans up the garbage in the endzone for a final score of 10-11 and, as we all know, last point wins... Except that it doesn't. But we left the field feeling confident and just to prove it ran a final sprint to seal our almost victory. 5th time's the charm!
We drove/flew home feeling like there is still much to be done, and gosh we can't wait to get back to work! Not enough, never enough, more, more, MORE.
P-O-R- oh..wait..sorry.. B-E-N-T BENT BENT BENT.
